Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers was a TV series in the late 1980s. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a film from the late 1980s. The 2022 Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers film brings the classic cartoon characters into the live-action world just like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. There is a mystery and toon napping in both films.
Andy Samberg voices Dale who has been CGI’d into full 3D while John Mulaney voices chip, still a flat cartoon. There is a mixture of 2D and 3D characters from all over the place. The ugly Sonic that fans hated so much, complete with human teeth is in this film! It contains endless other references that can be spotted by a wide range of audiences and add to the fun.
The story is a classic buddy film with one clinging to the past and one disillusioned in the present. They are united to save an old friend and confront organized crime. The story is well-trodden territory, and the character development follows the expected path with few surprises.
I enjoyed the film and some of the references. I do not understand how they got approval for using all of the IP, but somehow, they did. It was released straight to streaming so the barrier of entry is low and worth a watch if you want an easy laugh after a stressful day.
